Question Answer
What are differences between individuals of the same species caused by? Different alleles
Sum up natural selection -More organisms created than can possibly survive -Competition for resources such as food -variation in all species -Therefore the best adapted will survive and pass on more of their characteristics to their off spring
Name two advantages of having a large gene pool -greater chance of some individuals having a favorable genotype so they can survive unfavorable conditions -faulty alleles are unlikely to be paired up and expressed
What is a genetic bottleneck? Large population becomes small, due to natural disaster, some individuals remain and some genotypes are lost. population recovers from a small number
what is the founder effect? is the loss of genetic variation that occurs when a new population is established by a very small number of individuals from a larger population
List the advantages and disadvantages of selective breeding Advantages - produces high yielding crops and animals which results in more affordable food -more tolerant strains that can live where other strains cant -produces more disease resistant individuals. Disadvantages - reduces genetic variation due to inbreeding, lead to health problems. -inbreeding increase the number of individuals with genetic disease
An organ is.... a collection of specially organised tissues tat performs a function
What do antibiotics fight? Bacterial disease
Define evolution the gradual change in the characteristics of a species so that they become more adapted to their environment
Give a few examples of antibiotic action - inhibit an enzyme that bacteria use to build their cell walls -preventing protein synthesis by inhibiting ribosomes -interfering with DNA replication
