What positive reactions did the work of Chadwick have? -Poor pleased with public improvements -Government pleased with research done
What oppositions did Chadwick have? -Local councils didn't want change-not compulsory so only 50 local councils had medical officers -The rich did not like paying for it
At roughly what time period were the Cholera epidemics? 1830's to 1860's (1831-1866, to be precise)
What did John Snow discover, and what action did he take? -All on Broad St had Cholera except Brewers -Stopped use of water pump -Bad water caused cholera
What opposition did Snow have and how was it solved? -People trusted miasma and spontaneous generation -Once Pasteur's germ theory was accepted, the Government accepted that Cholera was water bourne
When was the Great Stink? 1858
What happened in the Great Stink? -Very hot summer -Smell so overwhelming House of Commons effected
What did Joseph Bazalgette do? -Parliament gave him the responsibility of solving the Great Stink -Came up with sewers
What were the positives of Bazalgette's work? -People pleased that somebody finally took action -People could return to their homes -Less illness spread -His system still stands and is used today
What opposition did Bazalgette have? -Cost was an issue -Sewage still ended up in the Thames on rare occaasions
When was the Reform Act? 1867
What did the 1867 Reform Act give? -A vote to all householders or those with £10+ year rent -Give a vote to agricultural land owners -Parties had to start listening to the poor
Why did people oppose Government intervention in public health? -Little understanding about cause of disease -Cost to ratepayers -Attack on Freedom -People liked self intervention and Laissez Fiare
