Integrated control system The harnessing of biological and chemical properties to control pests and pathogens in order to protect an environment
Producer An organism capable of producing complex organic compounds through the process of photosynthesis.
Consumer An organism that generally obtains food by feeding on other organisms or organic matter due to the lack of ability to manufacture their own food source.
decomposer An organism whose ecological function involves recycling nutrients by performing decomposition as it feeds on dead or decaying organisms.
Detritivore An organism that feeds on organic waste.
Zoo plankton Animal constituent of Plankton
Phytoplankton Plankton that consists of minue plant and other photosynthetic organisms.
Carnivore An animal or plant that requires a stable diet of mainly animal tissue.
Herbivore An animal that consumes mainly plant.
Omnivore An animal that includes both plants and animals in its normal diet.
Trophic level A position in a food chain occupied by an organism.
Ecosystem A system which includes all living organisms in a area as well as abiotic functioning as a unit.
Habitat The place where an organism or Biological population normally lives.
Agricultural ecosystem Ecosystems that are made up largely of domesticated animals and plants to produce food. achieved by preventing s climax community.
Pesticide A chemical which is used to kill unwanted organisms.
Herbicide A chemical used to kill o control the growth of plants.
Insecticide A chemical used to kill insects. A type of pesticide
fungicide An agent that destroys fungi
Biological control Control of pets by introducing a predator into its native environment.
Productivity The rate at which organic matter is produced as chemical energy through photosynthesis.
Net productivity Net productivity = Gross productivity - Respiratory loss
Dissipated A process in which energy is lost without accomplishing useful energy transfer to the next trophic level.
Biological Accumulation The accumulation within living organisms of toxic substances accruing in the environment.
Monoculture The cultivation or growth of a single crop.
