Question Answer
Why was the Berlin Wall Built? > Berlin split into two: East (USSR) and West (USA, France, UK) > High standard of living in West sharply contrasted with the East - reminded people that the communist system setup was not successful > Brain Drain - ~2.7 million people crossed from East to West between 1945 - 1960; usually educated people, which was likely to continue > Khrushchev suspected the USA was sending spies into East Berlin and through to the Eastern block > Khrushchev gave the USA a 6 month ultimatum to leave Berlin or go to war > Summit Meetings (next cards)
What happened at the May 1959 Summit Meeting between the USA and USSR? Geneva, May 1959 > Proposals for how Berlin should be governed > No agreement made > Khrushchev invited to the USA for talks
What happened at the September 1959 Summit Meeting between the USA and USSR? Camp David, September 1959 > No agreement made about Berlin > Soviets agreed to withdraw the ultimatum of war if the USA did not leave Berlin > Appeared to establish better relations between Eisenhower and Khrushchev
What happened at the May 1960 Summit Meeting between the USA and USSR? Paris, May 1960 > American U-2 Spy Plane shot down as it flew over the USSR > Eisenhower refused to apologise for spying on the USSR > Khrushchev walked out of the meeting > No decisions were made
What happened at the June 1961 Summit Meeting between the USA and USSR? Vienna, June 1961 > Kennedy now president of the USA > Khrushchev renewed the Berlin Ultimatum of 1958 > Kennedy concerned but did not want to appear weak > No final decision was made
What happened During the Building of the Berlin Wall? > 13th August 1961: East Germans began building a wall around West Berlin > Initially wire fence, gradually replaced with concrete > Allies did nothing to stop the building > Movement between the East and West was stopped > Soviet and USA tanks faced eachother across divided Berlin streets
What were the Concequences of the Berlin Wall being Built? > Flow of East → West Refugees reduced (~5,000 people managed to escape during the 28 years it was up for) > Western nations used the wall against the USSR; it seemed that communist states needed to build a wall to stop citizens leaving > Peace was maintained, but at a price: families split with extreme travel restrictions > Serious stand-off between the two superpowers post wall building > Kennedy worked to avoid conflict: if the USSR removed its troops, the USA would do the same, which ended the stand-off > Wall became a symbol of the East-West division
