Purpose of Goal 1 - Reduce the level of poverty within developing countries through the development of strategies to promote employment opportunities. - With greater employment and income, it is expected that there will be a reduction in the number of people suffering from hunger.
Reasons why Goal 1 is important Poverty has an enormous impact on morbidity and mortality rates in developing countries.
Poverty impacts : - Being able to purchase the quantity of nutritious food needed to sustain life. - Being able to access the required health care to treat preventable illnesses. - Being able to afford shelter to protect families from danger and extreme environmental conditions.
Goal 1, Target 1 Halve, between 1990 and 2015 the proportion of people whose income is less than US$ 1:25 a day.
Goal 1, Target 2 Achieve full and productive employment for all, including women and young people.
Goal 1, Target 3 Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people who suffer from hunger.
Goal 1 Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
Goal 2 Achieve universal primary education.
Reasons why Goal 2 is important - Education promotes literacy -> greater employment prospects -> increased income -> greater access to nutritious food, shelter and health care. - higher literacy rates -> more economic growth -> increased capacity of countries to assist those in need.
Purpose of Goal 2 Purpose ALL boy and girls in developing countries with access to primary schooling to improve literacy and numeracy skills. -> skills and knowledge to engage in health promoting behaviours. MUST STATE - FULL COURSE OF PRIMARY EDUCATION
Goal 2, Target 1 Ensure that by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.
Goal 3 Promote gender equality and empower women.
Purpose of Goal 3 - Raise SES of women in developing countries through ensuring that females have equal access to education. - Empower women by increasing opportunities for involvement in decision-making processes that affect their life.
Reasons why Goal 3 is important - Females are generally less likely than males to have access to education. - Numeracy and Literacy skills can help women develop personal businesses. - Education EMPOWERS women -> higher paid employment, less likely to work in jobs that impact their health negatively.
Goal 3, Target 1 Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and in all levels of education by no later than 2015.
Goal 4 Reduce child mortality.
Purpose of Goal 4 - Reduce the number of deaths of children under the age of five. - (REDUCE THE U5MR)
Reasons why Goal 4 is important - Some of the most deadly causes of diseases can be vaccinated against. - Children often die from preventable diseases. - CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD'S SOCIETY AND ECONOMY.
Goal 4, Target 1 Reduce by two thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate.
Goal 5 Improve maternal health.
Purpose of Goal 5 - Reduce the number of deaths of women as a result of pregnancy and child birth, and increase access to reproductive services. - Provide women with appropriate information and health care to promote health prior to, during and following childbirth.
Reasons why Goal 5 is important - Maternal mortality rates are high in developing countries. - If mothers are in good health, they can take better care of their families.
Goal 5, Target 1 Reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio.
Goal 5, Target 2 Achieve, by 2015, universal access to reproductive health.
Goal 6 Combat HIV/AIDs, malaria and other diseases
Reasons why Goal 6 is important - HIV/AIDs, malaria and other diseases such as TB are largely preventable, and contribute significantly to the global burden of disease. - Prevention of HIV will also significantly reduce the number of AIDs ORPHANS is vaccine preventable and can be treated with antibiotics.
Goal 6, Target 1 Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDs.
Goal 6,Target 2 Achieve by 2010 universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDs for those who need it.
Goal 6,Target 3 Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases.
Goal 7 Ensure environmental sustainability.
Purpose of Goal 7 - Maintain the qualities of the physical environment that are considered important for HHD to ensure that they are sustainable for future generations. - Improve the lives of those living in slums. - Reduce biodiversity loss, ensure access to safe drinking water and sanitation which are important for promoting HHD
Reasons why Goal 7 is important - Environmental sustainability -> reducing biodiversity loss. This ensures that resources, such as food from plants and animals continue to be available. - When forests are destroyed, rivers are polluted and food becomes scarce, it is usually the poorest people who are most affected.
Goal 7, Target 1 Integrate principles of sustainable development into country policies and programs and reverse the loss of environmental resources.
Goal 7,Target 2 Reduce biodiversity loss, achieving, by 2010, a significant reduction in the rate of loss.
Goal 7,Target 3 Halve by 2015 the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.
Goal 7,Target 4 By 2020, to have achieved a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers.
Goal 8 Develop a global partnership for development.
Purpose of Goal 8 - Address the needs of the least developed countries through the provision of ODA. - Provide affordable medications and increase access of information and communications technology. - Reduce debt of developing countries.
Reasons why Goal 8 is important - Through global partnerships, developed countries are able to assist developing countries to improve living standards -> reduction of of mortality & morbidity. - ICT assists individuals to further develop their business and promotes trade.
Goal 8, Target 1 Address the special needs of the least developed countries, land-locked countries and small island developing states.
Goal 8, Target 2 Develop further an open, rule-based, predictable, non-discriminatory trading and financial system.
Goal 8, Target 3 Deal comprehensively with developing countries' debt.
Goal 8, Target 4 In cooperation with pharmaceutical companies, provide access to affordable essential drugs in developing countries.
Goal 8, Target 5 In cooperation with the private sector, make available benefits of new technologies, especially information and communications.
