Question Answer
What is kinetic energy? Energy of an object due to its motion.
What is gravitational potential energy? Energy of an object due to its position.
What is chemical energy? Energy stored in a substance and realised when chemical reactions take place.
What is electrical energy? Energy transferred by an electric current.
What is elastic strain energy? Energy stored in an elastic object when we stretch or squash it.
What is nuclear energy? Energy released when a nucleus of an atom splits or disintegrates.
What is internal energy? Energy of an object due to its internal motion and positions of its molecules.
What is heat energy? Energy transferred from a hot object to a cold object.
What is sound energy? Energy transferred by sound waves.
What is light energy? Energy transferred by light.
Does energy transfer in different forms? Yes.
Can energy be changed from one form into other forms? YES
Energy can be transformed from one form to another or transferred from one place to another. True or false? TRUE
Energy can be created but cannot be destroyed. True or false? FALSE
What does a petrol generator consist of? A petrol engine and an electricity generator.
What are electricity generators in power stations driven by? Turbines.
What is the unit of energy? Joules.
What is efficiency? Efficiency is a measure of how much energy supplied to a device is usefully used.
When does nuclear fission occur? When a uranium nucleus splits as a result of being struck by a neutron.
Is energy released in nuclear fission? Yes
What does neuclear fission mean? when the nucleus of a uranium atom is unstable and can split into in two when a neutron from outside the atom colds with it.
Is energy released in nuclear fusion? yes
What is nuclear fusion? When two nuclei are forced close enough together so they form a single larger nucleus.
What is a wind turbine? Its an electricity generator on top of a tall tower.
What is a wave generator? A floating generator turned by waves.
How are hydro-electricity generators turned? They are turned by water running down hill.
How does a tidal power station work? It traps each high tide and uses it to turn generators.
How can solar energy be converted into energy? Using solar cells or used to heat water directly in solar heating panels.
How is geothermal energy realised? By radio active substances deep inside the earth.
What is the equation for work done? Force X distance
Equation for kinetic energy? 1/2 X m X v (squared) v = speed m= mass
What is the equation for gravitational potential energy? m X g X h m = mass g = gravity h = vertical distance moved
What is the unit of power? watt (W)
watt is equal to 1 J/s True or false True
How many watts are in 1 kilowatt? 1 kilowatt= 1000 watts
What is the equation for power (in watts)? Energy transferred _________________ Time taken
All types of energy are measured in? WATTS
