Question Answer
GREENE VARDIMAN (GV) BLACK 1896 - classified cavity preps
GV Black invented 1st drill 1st use of nitrous oxide
"extension for prevention" removed more tooth than needed
BLACKS CLASSIFICATION
DISADVANTGES OF BLACKS CLASSIFICATION before adhesive materials-retentive cavities, removes more tooth, does not include RC and 2nd caries!
CAVITY PREPARATION Outline form:gain access to caries directly
RESISTANCE FORM:resistance to occ forces. Tooth structure and material withstand masticatory forces. Cavity Floor at right angle to direction of forces. Good depth compatible with material
Enamel margins must be finished - un supporting enamel is prone to # Adhesive restorations - does not require retentive/resistance form - is desirable as long as minimal prep is done
RETENTION FORM:grooves in cavity walls, use undercuts and occ keys, use of etch and bond materials Retention only required for non-adhesive materials
TREATMENT OF RESIDUAL CARIES:always remove from EDJ first, then base of cavity SOFT DENTINE is infected and should be removed, FIRM but stained dentine in cavity can be left
In ANTERIOR teeth stained dentine may be removed for aesthetic reasons. Preserve oblique ridge where poss Use Slow speed HP with small rose head bur, then hand excavator
CORRECTION OF ENAMEL MARGINS:unsupported enamel is prone to #. Remove weakend tooth if placing amalgam Can be splinted to adhesive material. If placing comp bevel edges to increase surface bonding
CAVITY DEBRIDEMENT: Cavity should be thoroughly washed and dried to remove any debris and bacteria Use 3in1 syringe
CAVITY PREP FEATURES:box prep, gingival floor, occ floor, pupo axial wall, dovetail occ lock (with isthmus), beveled angle LINE ANGLE:Where to lines/surfaces meet. CAVOSURFACE ANGLE:where cavity wall meets tooth surface(crown) 90- 110 degree
POINT ANGLE: where 3 or more lines(surfaces) meet STAGES IN CAVITY PREP: 1.gain access to caries (outline form), 2.remove the caries, 3.think look design!, 4.complete the restoration
