Question Answer
When? 1923 (A year after Benito Mussolini becomes the fascist leader of Italy)
Who + where? Greek island of Corfu (Mediterranean Sea) Greece and Italy
Why? 5 Italians working on the Greek / Albanian border were ambushed and killed. Including General Tellini. Italy demanded 50 million lira in compensation. Greece refused.
What happened? Greeks denied any responsibility - Mussolini bombarded and occupied Corfu, 15 inhabitants were killed. League condemned Italy and ordered Italy to leave.
Outcome + lessons learned? Mussolini appealed to the Conference of Ambassadors (also condemned Italy) but ordered Greece to pay. Resolved BUT seemed Italy got preferential treatment. As a permanent member of the Council should abide by Article 10. League powerless against a determined aggressor.
