Inferences Logical Guesses
Imagery Includes the "mental pictures" that readers experience with a passage of literature.
Repitition A sound, word, phrase, or line that is repeated for emphasis and unity.
Tone the attitude a writer takes toward a certain subject. Exs. Serious, informal, humorous, etc.
Plot The sequence of events in a story. Actions that characters take to resolve the conflict.
Mood Style Feeling or atmosphere the writer creates for the reader.
Theme An underlying message about life or human nature that the writer wants you to understand.
Setting The time and place that the story is taking place.
Simile A figure of speech that makes a comparison between 2 unlike things using "like" or "as".
Onomatopeia The use of words whose sounds echo their meanings. Exs. Buzz, gargle, etc.
Metaphor A figure of speech that makes a comparison between 2 things that are basically unlike but have something in common.
Hyperbole A figure of speech in which the truth is exaggerated for emphasis or humorous effect.
Personification A figure of speech in which human qualities are given to an object, animal, or idea.
Style Refers to the particular way in which a work of literature is written – not what is said but how it is said.
Connotation The attitude or feeling associated with a word.
Author's Purpose To express thoughts or feelings. To inform or explain. To entertain.
Author's Perspective A unique combination of ideas, values, feelings, and beliefs that influences the way the writer looks at a topic.
