Question Answer
ORIGINS OF WW1 1888-1914
Franco Prussian War: In 1871, France got defeated in this war meaning the French have to give the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine to Germany and 5 billion francs/£200 billion Triple Alliance: In 1882, Bismark the chancellor of Germany knew that France would want revenge from A&L so made an alliance to isolate France. Germany+Austria-Hungary+Italy=TripleAlliance
Franco-Russian Alliance:1893 The French urged this alliance as they wanted to get revenge on Germany after A&L was taken. Russia wanted an alliance with Germany but the Kaiser was not interested. It took 2 years to sign this alliance but it became stronger when France gave money to Russia for Railways France knew that if they made an agreement with Germany that if ever there was a war, the Germans would have to fight on both sides of their country
Splendid Isolation:19th century This was where Britain did not want to get involved with any of Europe's alliances or affairs. To be safe from any attacks, they relied on the Royal Navy, the largest navy at the time covering 1/4 of the world. Boer War: This war was between the Dutch Farmers and the British. The British rejected Transual Altimaum (British troops on border to withdraw) Dutch Farmers Rebelled
Entente Cordial:1903-1904 The Entente Cordial was an agreement between Britain and France. Britain would help France get Morocco and France would help Britain get Egypt Kaiser Wilhelm ii's Foreign Policy: "Weltpolitik"was the word he used to tell other countries that Germany deserves "A Place In The Sun"
Crisis in Morocco:1905 The Kaiser rode in to Tangier in a white horse; military band and Moroccan troops. He reveled that he wants Moroccan independence and not to be taken over by France, testing the Entente Cordial. The Kaiser announced for a international conference (in Algeciras) to be taken place to discuss Morocco. France was given joint control of police force with Spain and Germany left empty handed.
The Anglo- Japanese Alliance:1902 Britain had formed an alliance with Japan in which they promised to defend eachover if they got attacked by 2 or more countries. Britain was even more Splendid and Japan was out preventing Russian expansion Britain did not need any alliances in Europe. The Boer War had ended with no European action against Britain
The Anglo-Russian Agreement-1907 Because Britain and Russia had backed France in Algeciras, France used this as a opportunity to improve relationships between them. This solved a lot of oversea colonial problem especially in Tibet As all terms of the alliances were secret, Germany thought that Britain had made a policy of encirclement against the Germans. This was because Britain now had an agreement with both F&R. The terms of both alliances were NOT DEFENSIVE, Germany did not know that.
T8he Bosnian Crisis:1908 Many countries in the Balkans were in the process of becoming independent from The Turkish Empire. Most of these countries were occupied by Slavs. Serbia had plans to unite all these countries into a Yugoslavia or Greater Serbia until Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia without informing anyone. This annoyed Serbia but it is too small to resist A-H so they asked Russia to help (most slavs lived in Russia). Russia backed there demands for a conference but now, all depended on Kaiser Wilhelm II
