Question Answer
In respiration, energy released from glucose is used to make what? ATP
Knowing what ATP stands for could help if you forget the structure of it, so, what does ATP stand for? Adenosine Triphosphate
Explain briefly how ATP store/release energy. (Use your knowledge of the bonds to help) Between the three phosphate groups in ATP, there are bonds which are very unstable and have low activation energy. This means they are easily broken, and when they are broken, they release a lot of energy.
In what type of reaction is ATP broken down to release energy? Hydrolysis reaction
The breaking down of ATP can be coupled to energy-requiring cells, what does this allow? It allows energy to be used directly instead of being lost through heat.
What are the products of the break down of ATP? ADP, an inorganic phosphate ion and Energy
What does ADP stand for? Adenosine Diphosphate
Write the word equation for the hydrolysis of ATP Adenosine triphosphate + water --> Adenosine Diphosphate + inorganic phosphate ion + energy
Write the symbol equation for the hydrolysis of ATP ATP + H2O --> ADP + Pi + E
The hydrolysis of ATP is catalysed by what enzyme? ATP Hydrolase
ADP can be changed into ATP when something is added. What is this reaction called? Synthesis of ATP / ATP Synthesis
When changing ADP to ATP, a molecule of _______ is removed, this means it is a _____________ reaction. When changing ADP to ATP, a molecule of water is removed, this means it is a condensation reaction.
What is added to ADP to synthesize is to ATP? An inorganic phosphate ion
when an inorganic phosphate ion is added to something, it is called: Phosphorylation
The synthesis of ATP is catalysed by what enzyme? ATP synthase
Give two ways (relating to photosynthesis and respiration) how the synthesis of ATP from ADP occurs 1) It occurs in plant and animal cells during respiration: Oxidative phosphorylation 2) In chlorophyll-containing plant cells during photosynthesis: Photophosphorylation
Name the three components of ATP and explain them briefly. 1) Adenine = a nitrogen-containing organic base 2) Ribose = a pentose sugar that acts as a bakcbone to which other parts are attached 3) Phosphates = 3 phosphates in a chain
Draw out a molecule of ATP
