Question Answer
How does Owen use age in his first poem? Even though these are all young soldiers, he describes them in a way that makes them seem old, as if war has aged them.
How does Owen describe disability in the first poem? Everone is slow. He gives them are exagerated disabilites, like blindness and deafness. He talks about the blood on men's feet, either from cuts from walking or from the blood of dead men. Shows how everyone is tired and beaten down, barely able to walk.
Where does the poem shift? How does it change? As soon as the writer starts talking about the gas in the air, everything seems to speed up. the tense also changes from past to present, making the poem seem more desperate, as if it is happening right now.
Who was the first poem originally written for? A patriotic poet named Jessie. She was encouraging men to go to war using guilt and glorifying war. This poem was meant to tell her and others what war is really like?
Why does the speaker describe the man who didnt get his mask on as drowning in a green sea. the lenses in the gas masks are green so as the man was poisoned by the gas, gasping for air, it looked like he was drowning.
Why does the speaker describe himself as helpless? There is nothing you can do for someone who is poidoned b the gas. If you dont get your mask on in time its too late. the speaker is seeing his own inability to help the man, only being able to watch him as he drowns.
Why is the use of the term innocent tongues significant? It is a directly related to the use of the word corrupt just before. it is mean to showthat war corrupts the innocent
What is the main message of the poem? war corrupts the innocent and ages the young. States there is no honor or glory in dying for ones country and it is not poetic or beautiful at all
What is the literal translation of the poems name? It is Sweet and Honorable to die for ones country
In the second poem, the man is described as wearing a horrible gray outfit. What is her wearing? He is wearing a hospital gown.
What can we infer about the mans physical disabilites from the poem? he is unable to walk and at least one of his sleeves it cut off at the elbow, meaning he has lost at least 3 limbs, maybe 4.
Why deos the sound of the boys voices fading away make him sad? He mentioned they are mothered away. Why is this significant? The boys simply have been called home by their mothers to go to bed. For this man he has no women, mother or lover, to put him to bed. He is too helpless to even get into bed by himself.
He describe girl glancing lovlier as the night comes. What does this mean? either when night comes girls are more likely to look at you with love, or they glance against you and others as they dance.
He says he will never know again how slim girls waists are. Why is this significant? two reasons. First he has only arm, maybe less, so he cant really hold anyone like he used to. Also he can't walk, meaning his dancing days are over.
He states that he threw away his knees. How can this be interpreted? The wastefulness of it to to loose his legs, and also how quickly they were lost from a bomb or some other explosion.
How is the soldiers age apparent? Why is it important? he syas in the poem that he signed up a year ago and that he had been younger then 19 at the time, lying so he could inlist early. This meaning this depressed, old feeling, forgotten man can't be any more then 19 years old. War has aged hijm 40 years and taking everything that was was important to him in such a short time.
What was his view on the war before he went over seas. He thought it was glamourous and honourable. He expected it to be like a football match, all returning glory and only minor injuries. he didnt really thing about fighting. just impressingthe girls, his uniform, getting paid, and going on leave. he didn't understand what was going on.
What is the irony when it comes to his idea about how women would perceive him? His biggest reason for signing up was to impress girls when he came home. Now women ignore him and treat him like a disease. He has impressed no one.
How has the man changed? he is humbler and sad. He has given up on glory and is taking pity where he can get it
How are the two poems related? both show the aftermath of war, criticizing propaganda and the honor behind war. Both talk about the lies used to get men to enlist
