Question Answer
Definition of a force SIMPLIFIED A force is a push or a pull
Definition of a force COMPLICATED A force is a push or a pull when a force is applied to a body, it will cause a change in the state of the body making it accelerate/decelerate. A force can also change the shape of an object. It is measured in N (newtons)
Definition of balanced forces Balanced forces are equal in size but opposite in sign, therefore summing to zero (i.e. balanced forces, balanced charge)
Definition of unbalanced forces Balanced forces do not add up to zero (i.e. unbalanced forces have a non-zero resultant or sum)
Definition of stopping distance The stopping distance is the total distance taken for a car to stop
What are the two parts to stopping distance? Thinking distance Braking distance
Define thinking distance The thinking distance is the distance between a driver realizing that they need to stop and the beginning of the braking distance.
Define braking distance The braking distance is the distance between the beginning of breaking and the point where the forces are balanced, equilibrium is reached and the car is at a complete stand still.
What is terminal velocity? Terminal velocity is the constant speed that a freely falling object eventually reaches when the resistance of the medium through which it is falling prevents further acceleration.
What is Hooke's Law? The extension of an elastic object such as a wire or spring is proportional to the stretching force, provided the extension is not too large.
State the formula for Hooke's Law F = k x e
The F in Hooke's law What does it stand for? What is it measured in? The F stands for force It is measured in newtons (N)
The k in Hooke's Law What does it stand for? What is it? What is it measured in? Spring constant: A characteristic of a spring which is defined as the ratio of the force affecting the spring to the displacement caused by it. Measured in N/m (newton meters
The e in Hooke's Law What does it stand for? What does it mean? What is it measured in? Extension When an elastic object - such as a spring - is stretched, the increased length is called its extension. It is measured in meters
What do we do to prevent speeding in this country? In this country, we put up speed limits to tell people what the fastest speed allowed is. We also have speed cameras which catch the people who speed so they can be punished, encouraging them not to speed again.
What is the equation for acceleration? change in velocity _____________________ time taken
What is the equation for change in velocity? v - u __________ t
v = u = t = v = final velocity u = initial velocity t = time
Now state the equation using words change in velocity = final velocity - initial velocity __________________________________ time
Braking or Breaking distance? Braking
State the 3 equations linking distance, speed and time
