| Building borders | 20000 years ago there were no borders in these islands - because nobody was living here. But over time, different tribes arrived. They fought over things like land, trade & religion In the end, borders were built between different areas. We still have them today. |

| What is weather? | Weather means the state of the atmosphere. Weather can change from day to day. It can be different in different places on the same day. |
| Which parts are colder? Warmer? | The north is usually colder than the south, since it is further from the Equator. Average temperature: Jan, around 4 or 5°C, July, around 13 or 14°C It's colder on highland than on low land. The higher you go, the cooler it gets. The south is warmest since it is nearest the Equator. Average temperature: Jan, around 6 or 7°C, July, around 16 or 17°C. The west coast is warmer than the east coast, in winter. That's because it's warmed by a warm ocean current, called the North Atlantic Drift. |
| Which parts are wettest? | The higher parts are wetter. High ground forces the warm, moist air to rise. So water vapour cools and condenses. Clouds form. It rains. The rain falls on the windward side of the hill - the side facing the wind. The other side- the leeward side - stays quite dry. The dry area on the leeward side is called the rain shadow. |
