Question Answer
What is energy? Energy is the ability to make a change happen, such as moving something around. It makes things happen.
What are some different forms of light energy? There are many forms of energy, but a few examples are heat energy, light energy, kinetic energy, sound energy and electrical energy.
What is kinetic energy? Kinetic energy is 'the energy of movement'. This form of energy is found in anything that moves, and the faster the object, the more kinetic energy it has.
What is electrical energy? This kind of energy has the ability to power your TV, computer, microwave and toaster; basically any electrical appliance has electrical energy. Electrical energy mostly comes from power stations, batteries, solar cells and sparks, such as lightning.
What is sound energy? Sound energy is the energy that air has when it vibrates, which our ears and brain interpret the vibrating of the air as sounds. Sound energy can be heard from our voice, music instruments, power tools and cars.
What is light energy? This particular form of energy can come from light globes, fires, the Sun or animals, like glow-worms and fireflies. Without light energy, the world would be very, very dark.
What is heat energy? Heat energy can also come from the Sun, chemical reactions, flames, electrical devices, or even from living things, such as humans and animals. Heat energy has many abilities. They are warming, burning, drying, melting and rising hot-air balloons.
What is potential energy? Potential energy is stored energy possessed by an object, such as that of a squashed spring.
How can energy be measured? Energy can be measured using a special unit of measurement called 'joule' (J). 1 joule is a very small amount of energy.
How is it possible to gain energy from food? Before the food was made, it had originally obtained energy from the Sun, since plants capture sunlight and convert it into chemical energy in the form of sugars, such as glucose, during the process of photosynthesis.
What are some different types of potential energy? Four different types of potential energy are gravitational energy, nuclear energy chemical energy and elastic potential energy.
What is gravitational energy? Gravitational energy is the energy stored in an object when it is above the ground. If an object is higher than the ground, it has greater gravitational potential energy.
Give an example of gravitational potential energy. If you're on a high water slide, you will have more gravitational energy at the top, but you'll gain more kinetic energy on the way down.
What is nuclear energy? Nuclear energy is the energy stored inside the small particles that make up matter. Nuclear reactions produce heat and light and the nuclear energy is released in a nuclear power plant, in a nuclear bomb explosion, inside the Sun.
Give an example of nuclear energy. Nuclear energy can be found in bombs. When a bomb explodes, a nuclear reaction occurs and light and heat is produced.
What is chemical energy? Chemical energy is the energy stored in substances. This kind of energy is released by the human body when digesting food, and by cars, when burning fuel.
Give an example of chemical energy. An example of chemical energy could be the process of burning wood or paper.
What is elastic potential energy? Elastic potential energy is the kind of energy stored in a stretched or squashed spring, or rubber bands.
Give an example of elastic potential energy. An example could be a rubber band. When releasing a rubber band in its stretched form, elastic energy is released as soon as they are let go.
