Question Answer
Direct & indirect impact Direct: Direct interaction of an activity Indirect: One impact Will activate another impact
Steps i EIA 1: screening 2: scoping 3: assessing 4: mitigation 5: reporting/ monitoring 6: reviewing/auditing
What is EIA Environment impact assessment It's an activity to identify the impacts a project can have on a society & find solutions to minimize the impacts
What is EIS Environment impact statement A document required which state out the positive and negative impacts the project have. May list alternative action
What is EI Environment inventory Complete list over the environment as it is now, before project
What is FONSI? Finding of no significance impact A document which state out way the EIS is not required.
What is the objective of EIA? Predict the impacts in an early stage Fulfill the responsibilities of each generation to come Assure safety for all citizens & surroundings Attain widest range of beneficial users without degradation
Sceening Determine if the project have any effects on the environment & therefor require an assessment
Scoping Determine the extent of issues to be considered Here the locals can be asked (scoping opinion)
Assessing Impact identification, analyze/ predict Environment impacts
Mitigation Redesign: finding solution to problem EMP: Env. management plan (guide to improvements)
IEE Initial environmental examination Reviewing the environmental integrity used for project screening. Which project require a full scale EIA
What is an impact It's change that can be beneficial or not, & is brought by an activity
Assessment Evaluation and estimation of the impact
Steps in full scale EIA Scope (range of impacts) Identify (existing env. Determine components) Predict (define quantity & estimate probability) Evaluate ( who will be affected?)
Planning & management of impact studies Enter text here...
How do you evaluate the overall significance of impacts? (Mode+area+type+duration)x frequency or probability of occurrence
Types of EIA Site selection studies Rapid or comprehensive studies Regional studies Carrying capacity studies
Site selection studies Proximity to raw materials, infrastructure & markets etc.
Rapid or comprehensive studies Rapid: One season monitoring Comprehensive: 3 season studies
Regional studies Capacity of air, water & land components
Carrying capacity studies Resources availability
Cumulative impact Created as a result of the combination of the projects
Induced impacts ?
Criteria for selecting EIA methodologies 1.General 2. Impact identification 3. Measurements 4 interpretations & evaluation 5. Communication
General Simplicity Manpower time & budget constrain Flexibility
Impact identification Comprehensive Specification Isolation of project impact Timing & duration: identify location & extent on temporary scale
Impact measurements Commensurate units: comparing Explicit indicators Magnitude Objective criteria
Impact interpretation & evaluation Significance Explicit criteria Portrayal of with & without situation Uncertainty Risk Depth of analyse Alternative comparison Public involvement
Impact communication Affected parties Setting description Summary format Key issues Compliance
Ad hoc method Assembling of a team of specialist to identify impacts in their area Rough assessment
Different kinds of checklists Simple: no guidelines on how to measure Descriptive: have guidelines Scaling: yes/no/ maybe
Network method Identifying direct & indirect impacts Writhing and rating of impacts not featured
What does Matrices display Action & appropriate env. Factors
Types of matrices Leopold matrix Stepped matrix Simple matrices
Leopold matrix 100 specified actions & 88 environmental items Step 1: identify all actions 2:
Stepped matrix Address 2. & 3. Impacts Env. Factors displayed against other factors Remits: affected env. Not described properly
Conceptual framework List out env. Factors Apply selection proces Selected list of env. Factors Procure data& conduct baseline study Prepare description
Assessment of air pollution impacts proces 1:identification of impact 2:description of existing env. 3:procurement of relevant air quality & guidelines 4:impact prediction 5:Assessment of impact significant 6:Identification & incorporation-mitigation
