Question Answer
Biological Determinants of Health Factors relating to the body that affect health E.g. Genetics, Hormonal Changes, Body Weight
Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY's) A measure of burden of disease. One DALY equals one year of healthy life lost due to premature death and time lived with illness, disease or injury
Morbidity Refers to ill-health in an individual or levels of ill-health in a population
Mortality Refers to death in a population
Physical Development Changes to the body and its systems. These can be changes in size, complexity and motor skills.
Burden of Disease A measure of the impact of disease and injuries; Specifically it measures the gap between current health status and an ideal situation where everyone lives to an old age free of disease and disability. Burden of disease it measured in DALY's.
Incidence Refers to the number/rates of new cases of a disease/condition in a population during a given period.
Social Development The increasing complexity of behaviour patterns used in relationships with other people.
Determinants of Health Factors that raise or lower the level of health in a population or individual. Determinants of health help to explain or predict trends in health and why some groups have better or worse health than others.
Emotional Development The development of the full range of emotions and the optimal way of dealing with and expressing them.
Intellectual Development The development of processes in the brain such as thought, knowledge and memory
Prevalence The number or proportion of cases of a particular disease or condition present in a population at a given time
Health - WHO A state of complete physical, social and mental well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Optimal Health The achievable level of health an individual will reach is commonly referred to as the optimal health. given that individuals as are all born with different levels of development this would be different for everyone.
Individual Human Development The series of orderly, predictable changes that occur from conception until death. Development can be physical, social, emotional or intellectual.
Life Expectancy An indication of how long a person can expect to live, it is the number of years of life remaining to a person at a particular age if death rates do not change.
Physical Health (physical dimension of health) Relates to the efficient functioning of the body and its systems, and includes the physical capacity to perform tasks and physical fitness
Health Status An individual's or population's overall health, taking into account various aspects such as life expectancy, amount of disability and levels of disease risk factors.
Social Health (social dimensions of health) Being able to interact with other and participate in the community in both an independent and co-operative way.
Mental Health (mental dimensions of health) State of well-being in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.
