Question Answer
PUNCTUATION members: Acosta Cervantes Noelis Navarro Piedrahita Ruth Puerta Carrillo Jessica
THE COLON When hours and minutes are expressed in figures, separate them with colon. No space precedes or follows this colon. Examples: 8:25 a.m. 6:40 p.m. 9:15 p.m.
A colon is used to represent the word “to” in proportions: Example of proportions: 2:1
In business letters, use a colon after the salutation. In social letters, use a comma. Examples: Gentlemen: Dear Mr. Stone: Dear Aunt Helen,
THE DASH Use dashes in place of commas to set off a nonessential element that requires special emphasis. Do not leave a space before or after the dash. Example: At this year’s banquet, the speakers—and the food—were superb.
To give special emphasis to the second independent clause in a compound sentence, use a dash rather than a comma before the coordinating conjunction. Example: The information I sent you is true—and you know it!
Use dashes instead of parentheses when you want to give the nonessential element strong emphasis. Example: Call Susan Dickson—she’s with Telecom—and get her opinion.
Use a dash to show an abrupt break in thought or to separate an afterthought from the main part of a sentence. Do not leave space before or after the dash. Examples: I wish you would—Oh, forget it. Victoria’s plane will be landing in Barranquilla—or did she say Santa Marta? Don’t believe him—ever! NOT: Don’t believe him – ever!
PARENTHESES. Parentheses and dashes serve many of the same functions, but they differ in one significant respect: parentheses can set off only nonessential elements, where as dashes can set off essential and nonessential elements. Examples: Remember: In setting off elements, dashes emphasize; parentheses de-emphasize. In three of our factories (Atlántico, Bolívar, Magdalena) sales have gone up.
With references: This point is discussed in Chapter 7(see pages 93 to 102).
With dates: The “Sin On” Bible (1716) got its name from an extraordinary typographical error: instead of counseling the readers to “sin no more”, it urged them to “sin on more.”
With enumerated items within a sentence: We need the following information to complete our record of Ms. Lee’s experience (1) the number of years she worked for your company, (2) a description of her duties, and (39 the number of promotions she received.
Note: Letters are used to enumerate items within a sentence when the sentence itself is part of a numbered sequence. 3. Please include these items on your expense account (a) the cost of your hotel room; (b) the cost of meals, including tips; and (c) the amount you spent on transportation. Note: If the item in parentheses is to be incorporated at the end of a sentence, place the punctuation needed to end the sentence outside the closing parentheses. Please hand in your typing work by Monday (August 10). How can I reach John Blacksmith (he teaches at the Colombo)?
Do not use a period before the closing parenthesis except with an abbreviation. Example: Our office is open late on Thursdays (until 9 p.m.).
THE UNDERSCORE. Underscoring in typewritten material is the counterpart of italic type in printed material. Examples: The word quay is pronounced exactly the same as key. The word quay is pronounced exactly the same as key.
