Question Answer
Bonding Flashcards: The end
What happens in an exothermic reaction? Heat is lost
Can a covalent network solid be considered be polar or non polar? If so which one? No. is not polar or non-polar.
Is graphite soluble? Why? No. Because water has strong molecular bonds that won't trade for the weak attractions between C layers of graphite.
Explain the structure of graphite... Made up of layers or sheets of strong carbon atoms. The remaining electrons are intermolecular which means that they are delocalised between those layers of C's. It is a 2D shape.
What are the names of the 3 different types of covalent network solids you could be asked about in the exam? 1) Graphite 2) Diamond 3) Glass (Silicon Dioxide)
What are the key words used to describe polarity? - Shape - symmetrical/a-symetrical - Cancel - Electronegativity - Polar/non-polar bonds - Difference in negativity
How many regions of electron density does a tetrahedral shape have and what is the bond angle between each atom? 4 regions. 109 degrees.
How would you make an ionic solid conduct electricity? - Add heat and melt it. It breaks the electrostatic attraction between cations and anions giving free f;lowing charged particles. - Dissolve in water. Also breaks the attraction between the ions which allows the ions to move freely and conduct electricity.
Is an ionic solid conductive? Why No. If it is a solid it will not conduct. This is because there are no free charged electrons.
What are the key words used when describing lewis diagram/structure. - Region - Electron Density - Central atom - Bonding/ non-bonding - Repulsion
