Question Answer
What are tourists? Tourists come to experience the environment and culture of a place e.g. tropical rainforest or city centre.
What can a large amount of tourists do? Too many tourists can damage or permanently alter a area though, and spoil it for future generations. E.g. building hotels and other tourist facilities can destroy the habitats of plant and animals that the tourists have come to see.
What is sustainable tourism? Sustainable tourism is tourism that doesn't damage the environment people have come to see, e.g. by limiting the number of tourist developments or only permitting tourists activities in designated areas. It also benefits local people by generating employment, and allows income to be put back into conversation to protect the area.
Why do people think tourism can never be sustainable? Tourism is about attracting people to an area to generate profit or income for the local economy, so the more tourists there are, the better it is for the local economy. But, more tourists makes it more difficult to reduce the environmental impact the tourists have.
What needs to be done for sustainable tourism to happen? For sustainable tourism to succeed certain things need to be done, e.g. tourist numbers may need to be tightly controlled and tourist actives carefully monitored to make sure they don't damage or alter the environment.
