What is ECT? ECT involves passing a current through the brain via electrodes to the temples
What do the currents induce? A seizure which lasts for approx one minute
Is it more likely to use unilateral ECT or bilateral, why? Unilateral ECT, as this reduces side effects such as memory loss
What is the main use of ECT for? It is mainly used to treat individuals with severe depression
How often is the treatment given? 2 or 3 times a week for 3/4 weeks
When should ECT be used? Only if anti-depressant drugs have no effect & if there is a risk that the person will commit suicide
What is ECT's mode of action? It is thought to increase the availability of certain neurotransmitters in the brain & the secretion of hormones that may improve a depressed mood
Are there any side effects of ECT? They have been reduced (after the change from bilateral to unilateral ECT)
Are there any ethical issues regarding ECT? The Mental Health Act stated that ECT is prohibited if the patient is capable of making a decision and refuses treatment
