Question Answer
Why do gametes only have one copy of each chromosome? So you can combine one sex cell with another and still end up with the right amount of chromosomes
How many chromosomes do each gamete have? 23
What is meiosis? The production of cells which have half the normal umber of chromosomes
What is the first stage of meiosis? The cell duplicates its DNA- one arm of each chromosome is an exact copy
What is the second stage of meiosis? The first division. The chromosome pairs line up in the center of the cell
What is the third stage of meiosis? The pairs are then pulled apart sp each new cell only has one copy of each chromosome. Some of both parents chromosomes go into each cell
What is the fourth stage of meiosis? The second division, in which the cells line up against the center of the cell. The arms of the chromosomes are then pulled apart
What is the product of meiosis? you get four gametes each with only a single set of chromosomes in it
