Describe the Crusades A series of wars fought in a vain attempt to wrest the holy land from Muslim control.
What happened to the Christian Church in 1054? The Christian church formally split into the Roman Catholic Church centered in Italy and the Eastern Orthodox Church centered in Constantinople
What did the European Crusaders bring back after the crusades? The brought back silk, porcelain, and spices, they also gained knowledge of Arabic medicine, science and navigation.
What factors brought change to the late Middle Ages? The crusades, the black plague, the creation of gunpowder and the invention of the printing press.
What two major technical accomplishments changed the western world? Gunpowder because it led to warfare with guns instead of bows and swords. The Invention of the printing press because it ended the expensive hand copying manuscript (More literature/more education)
Where did the Renaissance start? Southern Italy, it quickly expanded to north Italy.
How did the introduction of Arab Trade and the black plague affect peoples view on life? (How are they related?) People owned more money, they created more luxurious life for themselves and with the constant presence of the black death people thought more about the "now" than the after life promised by the church.
Who are the Medici? An Italian family of bankers from Florence.
What are oligarchies? Italian Committees of the wealthy and powerful.
Who are the Fugger Family? Much like the Medici family they were also bankers but of Germany instead of Italy.
Christian Humanists. Christian based thinkers and writers. They were more spiritual than normal humanists. Appeared in northern Italy they were less materialistic, and more focused on questions of morality and ethics. Believed in basic goodness of humanity but thought society was corrupt.
Niccolo Machiavelli Wrote The Prince. -Admired the rising new monarchs. -Did not discuss the morality of Gods will. -Described what effective rulers did to get what they wanted.
Describe "Perspective" Art. Appeared during the renaissance; it had depth and was 3-D. -It was done with oil paint. -The figures were more individual and life-like
What are Frescoes? Sculpture. Done by mixing color into wet, plaster on wall or ceiling.
What type of art is this? Perspective art.
How did the Bubonic Plague help end the Feudal System? The decimation of about 30% of the population helped end the feudal system because laborers were in so much demand. (But there weren't enough people to fit those spots)
Brothers and Sisters of Common Life. Religious group from the Netherlands. Practiced "Modern Devotion". Men and women lived separately and communally. They established schools and worked to relieve the poor. Operated with the blessing of the papacy.
Thomas A' Kempis. Said that "Individuals could commune with god without the church." Did not advocate separation from the church Deeper more personal religion. Before Luther.
Desiderious Erasmus. -Netherlands. -Advocated education. -Praise of Folly -Laughed at theologians for believing in ideas like original sin an powerful lyrics. -Emphasized the life and teaches of Jesus. -Never challenged papal authority.
Thomas More. Wrote "Utopia" -Described an ideal society set vaguely on an island in the Atlantic. -The goal was to develop rational faculties. -Utopia "No where" and then "An Ideal Place"
Francesco Petrarch. Created poetry in a new form; sonnet.
Giovanni Boccaccio Wrote The Decameron. Secular tale. Primary goal was to understand humanity; not god.
Dante Alighieri. Wrote "The Divine Comedy." First description of hell. Written in the 1300's Established Modern Italian Dialect.
Where the Italian city-sates quickly overrun by invasions of other countries? Because they never became unified because of religion and politics while that other countries like Spain and France did.
Define Humanism. A secular conception of life, it emphasized individualism.
What is the most obvious difference between the Eastern and Western Churches? The eastern tradition of married clergy and the western church promoted a celibate priesthood.
Bladassare Castilgioni. Wrote the "Courtier" -Described proper behavior for renaissance men and women.
