Question Answer
What are the six ways of reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease? Stopping smoking Maintaining a healthy blood pressure Maintaining low blood cholesterol levels Maintaining a normal BMI Taking regular exercise Moderate or no alcohol consumption
What the three main drugs used to control blood pressure? How do they work? 1. ACE inhibitors - they inhibit the hormone which constricts blood vessels. 2. Calcium channel blockers - Calcium must pass through channels in the muscles lining the arteries in order for the arteries to contract. This drug blocks the channels. 3. Diuretics - increase urine production which rids the body of excess fluids and salt, decreasing blood plasma volume, lowering blood pressure.
How do statins reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease? What are common side effects of drugs aimed at reducing the risk of CVD? Statins inhibit the enzyme involved in the production of LDLs. Common side effects include dizziness, headaches, tiredness, nausea and muscle weakness.
What are the eight key features of a healthy diet? Energy balanced Reduced saturated fat More polyunsaturated fats Reduced cholesterol Reduced salt More non-starch polysaccharides (fibre) Includes oily fish More fruit and Vegetables
