Question Answer
What do you do when numbers with powers are multiplied together? (eg 5^2 x 5^4) Add the powers together (so it's 5^6)
What do you do when numbers with powers are divided? (eg 5^5 / 5^3) Minus the powers (so it's 5^2)
How do you work out powers of powers? (eg (3^2)^2) Multiply the powers together (so it's 3^4)
How do you write a negative power? (eg 2^-2) You put it in a fraction with 1 on top. (so it's 1/2^2 = 1/4)
How do you simplify algebra written Index Notation? Just the same as you would with a number, but you can't work out the actual answer at the end. (add, subtract or multiply the powers when appropriate and leave it when you can't do anything else)
Can you do this? y^2 + y^3 No
What does it actually mean when something has a positive power? (eg a power of 4) It is the number multiplied by itself however many times the power says. (so a power of 4 is the number multiplied by itself 4 times)
What does it mean when something has a negative power? It means that it is a fraction with 1 at the top and at the bottom is the number with a positive version of the negative power. (eg 2^-2 = 1/2^2)
