Question Answer
They are a form of direct democracy This is the purest form of democracy – rule by the people It is the closest recreation we can have of the original democratic system of Ancient Greece
By having a referendum, it is more likely people would accept the decisions Example – Good Friday Agreement in NI in 1998 It was important that it had widespread public support to help heal the divisions in society
Referendums will boost political participation and get the public involved in the campaign During the campaign both sides will attempt to get their view across and this will act as an educational vehicle for the public increasing their awareness of the issue
Referendums prevent unpopular decisions from happening, by stopping the government implementing things the people do not want An example of this is Labour wanted regional assemblies in England. It was put to a referendum and over 70% said NO!
By having referendums it helps prevent political deadlock, as it deals with the issue effectively. In 1975 both Lab and the Cons were divided over the issue of Europe The decisive ‘yes’ vote resolved the issue Similarly the referendum on electoral reform helped the coalition government solve the issue.
They provide a clear and direct answer to a specific question. the result would provide the government with a clear mandate for the future. The 1995 Quebec referendum was the second referendum to ask voters in the Canadian province of Quebec whether Quebec should proclaim national sovereignty and become an independent country, with the condition precedent of offering a political and economic agreement to Canada
Referendums promote democracy in a number of ways: they encourage political participation, enhance political participation, ensure major constitutional changes have been approved directly by the directorate keep government in touch with the electorate, and undermine Parliamentary democracy, effectively making decisions binding on the electorate
