Question Answer
Clinical Characteristics Obsessions: Intrusive thoughts or impulses that disturb the patient and cause distress. Compulsions: Thoughts or actions intended to help resist the obsession and provide relief from the distress and anxiety.
Emotional Characteristics Anxiety and distress, that the individual is aware of, which can lead to shame
Behavioural Characteristics Compulsive behaviours to reduce obsessive thoughts. Not always realistically connected
Cognitive Characteristics Recurrent, intrusive, uncontrollable thoughts, more than everyday worries.
Biological Explanations: Genetic Explanations COMPT gene creates high levels of dopamine. SERT gene created low levels of serotonin. Diathesis-stress says genes only create a vulnerability (some people have the gene but no disorder) and there are links with the same gene and other disorders
Neutral Explanations Dopamine in high levels and serotonin in low levels in compulsive behaviours
Anatomical Explanations Worry circuit explains how a damaged nucleus doesn't supress worry signals from the OFC to the thalamus the causes a cycle of anxiety.
Biological Explanations Evaluation :) - Supporting research from twin and family studies (Billet) :( - Does not consider the role of nurture and environmental factors :( - Genes are not specific to OCD, also strong links to Tourette's, autism and anorexia.
Biological Treatments Drug Therapy: SSRIs prevent the reuptake of serotonin, which therefore increases this neurotransmitter and the low levels associated with OCD. It does this by preventing the reabsorption of serotonin across the synapse.
Anti-anxiety Drugs BZs work by increasing the effectiveness of GABA that naturally clams the body down.
Biological Treatments Evaluation :) - Supporting research shows that SSRIs are more effectiveness that placebos. :) - Drug therapies are more cost effective and involve less time and effort compared to therapy. :( - Side effects such as insomnia, hallucinations and addiction.
