Direct Democracy ADVANTAGE give general public direct and unmediated control over government decision making. This ensures that the public's view and interests are properly and accurately articulated, and not distorted by politicians

Responsive government ADVANTAGE make government more responsive by forcing them to listen to public opinion between elections. They also express public opinion to be expressed on a particular issue
Reduced government power ADVANTAGE provide s a check on government power. Citizens therefore are protected against the danger of an over mighty government
Constitutional changes ADVANTAGES appropriate that constitutional changes be popularly endorsed via referendums they are more important than ordinary rules/laws
Mandate ADVANTAGE referendums can be seen to give a mandate
Resolving governmental deadlocks ADVANTAGE when the government is divided and can't come up with the decisions themselves
Ill- informed decisions DISADVANTAGE the general public is ill- formed, poorly educated and lacks political experience. The public's interests are therefore bet safeguarded by a system of 'government by politicians' rather than any form of popular self-government

Irresponsible government DISADVANTAGE allows governments to absolve themselves of responsibility by handing decisions over to the electorate
Strengthens government DISADVANTAGE government decides whether, when and over what issues referendums should be called on. They frame the question and can dominate the publicity campaign
Unreliable views DISADVANTAGE only provide a snapshot of public opinion at one point in time. They are therefore an unreliable guide to the public interest
