Question Answer
What is Discharge? The amount of water passing a point in the river in 1 second
What is Velocity? Speed of water in (m/s)
How do river channels and their valleys change downstream? In the Upper course it has a very steep gradient as the boulders are being tracted form the steep river due to mountainous relief. Vertical erosion takes place here
What are Interlocking Spurs? They are formed by steep hills that alternate from different sides of the valley. The hard rock sticks out so it is difficult for the river to erode and flows around the hard rock
What are Rapids? Rapids are turbulent parts of the water. White water passes through the hard rock
What is a waterfall? They are formed when the water flows over the hard rock. the soft rock is quickly eroded and undercuts the soft rock. The river then forms a plunge pool underneath the waterfall.
What are the Human factors that determine Flood risk? Urbanisation, Deforestation and Agriculture.
Explain fully how these work? Urbanisation is building on floodplains which creates impermeable surfaces such as tarmac roads. Water is transferred quickly to the drains
