Conservation & Research In general, most visitors would not tend to go for these reasons
Things to think about: Young born in the Easter holidays and summer holidays - coincidence? Young often "rejected" by mother so hand-fed - coincidence? Bonfire Night Bonanza - justified?
What are we being educated about? Husbandry? Wild habitats? Behaviour? What they look like? Does seeing animals in real life educate the public about species?

Zoo Livelihood Education & entertainment are paramount to the success of zoos Entertainment attracts more customers and appeals to everyone, education attracts certain type of customer
Zoo Livelihood: Conservation & Research Required by law All zoos and aquariums have to do this & prove they are But would they do it if it wasn't law?
Dual attraction WMSP, Drayton Manor, Chessington Zoo may use theme park to subsidise & pay for zoo while it establishes or vice versa
In reality... Zoo need to attract visitors to make money to pay for Animal husbandry Conservation Better enclosures Profit Zoos must make money to stay open
Role of Modern Zoos and Aquariums - WAZA To protect and secure endangered species, and ecosystems Zoos contribute to nature conservation by being part of global conservation actions Promote link between conservation & work to gain public support
Role of zoos 2: Zoos/Aquariums inform visitors of origins of threats to endangered species & advertise to find support Zoos state their conservation position to public, and highlight how the public can help, e.g. donations Conservation does not necc have to be financial support Zoos have unique position to inform public about conservational matters
Zoos can: Conduct field conservation projects or Contribute to such projects, through technical support, education, training or scientific research Also working with local institutions, Conduct/support scientific research, Stimulate and engage in political debates, Raise funds in order to support conservation projects
