Question Answer
What is a Network? A network is a collection of devises connected together by some sort of communication media to allow user to share software, data and hardware.
What is a NIC? A NIC (Network Interface Controller) is a device the decodes data that is received over a network and encodes data so that it can be sent over a network.
What are UTP cables? What is their disadvantage? UTP(unshielded twisted pair) these are copper cables that are used as a meduim to transfer data via electrical pulses. The quality of the data degrades over long distances.
What are Fiber Optic cables? What is their advantage? They are glass cables used to transfer data by light signals. The quality of data does not degrade, the transfer is faster and it can go longer distances.
What is a Star Topology? What is it's advantage? It is a network layout where every device is directly connected to a central device such as a switch. If a connection breaks only that device is disconnected.
What is an ADSL router? A multi-purpose device that combines the functions of a switch, a router, a modem and a WiFi access point.
What is a Switch? A Hardware Device used to connect computers in a central location so communication can occur.
What is a Router? A hardware device that makes communication between networks over the internet possible.
What is a Modem A device that converts the data from a computer to a format that can be transmitted over a communication channel.
What is a WiFi access point? A WiFi access point sends and receives radio signals to allow wireless connection to a wired network.
What does an access point consist off? A Sender/Transceiver and an Athena which sends and receives radio signals.
What is WiFi? WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) is a method of connecting to a wired network wirelessly.
What is WIMAX? what is its advantage? Worldwide interoperability for microwave access. It can cover a larger area than WiFi and is more secure than WiFi.
What are the Transfer rates of: 4G 3G WiFi 100 mbps 1-4 mbps 50 mbps
What are the limitations of the different communication media. WiFi, Wired, Cellular. Distance: WiFi 10m-100m | UTP 100m Accesability: Lan port | Hotspot | Cell Signal Bandwith
What is a PAN? What is a HAN? What is a LAN? whats is a WAN? Peronal: a netwrok with a range of a few meters organised around a person. Home: a network within a home Local: Connects Computers is small areas i.e school Wide: Spread over a large geographical area.
What is VOIP? Voice over internet protocol allows telephone calls to be made over LAN's, WAN's and the internet.
What are the Advantages of VOIP? cheaper than normal phone, software is free, allows for file transfer and conference calls.
What the Disadvantages of VOIP? need to buy credits to call real phones, Both users need the same software, Takes up lots of data. Both uses need good internet.
What is the Internet? A World Wide computer Network.
What is the WWW. The World Wide Web is a service on the internet, it consists of a vast collection of interlinked, interactive documents(HTML).
What are The Characteristics of WEB 1.0 Static HTML pages. Few Content Creators. Many Content consumers. page where updated regularly.
What the Characteristics of WEB 2.0? Dynamic Web Pages Users are also Content Creators Social Networking (*N.B more interactive than 1.0 )
What is Web 3.0? The Intelligent Web, data-mining and AI will allow user to have a much more personal experience. Will not be limited by hardware incompatibility. Will be defined by its mobile capability.
What does MPEG stand for? Moving pictures experts group.
What is a Static Website? A page that displays the same content to the user as when it was created. (Bishops.org.za)
What is a Dynamic Website? Pages that are created on the go and differ according the the user viewing them (Facebook)
What are the Advantages of Static pages? Easy to design. No need for server side programming skills. Don't need as much server power. Can be Interactive.
What are the Advantages of Dynamic websites. Can Adapt to user need and preferences, Perfect for on-line stores, More Interactice, Makes social networking possible.
What is FTP? File transfer Protocol is a protocol used for fast transfer of large files across computers.
What is RSS? Really Simple Syndicate is a news feed that provides the user with updated content from a number of news sources.
What is SEO? Search Engine Optimisation is a strategy used to obtain a high ranking placement in the search results page.
What Are RIA? Rich Internet Applications a web application that delivers the functions of a traditional desktop application. i.e. google docs
What are the advantages of using a websites app instead of going to the site? App is provides a better user interface. Give's user more control over what they can do. Transfer less Data. Allow user to receive notifications.
Name two Supporting Technologies (Assets)? Hyper Text Transfer Protocol: defines how webpages and their content are transferred across the web. Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure: Used for secure encrypted communication.
What is a Protocol? A Set of Rules which allow for communication and data transfer across a network.
What is DNS? Domain name system is a central registry that keeps track of all the URLs on the Internet.
What is BitTorrent? A peer to peer protocol used for the transfer and sharing of large files.
What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Bit-Torrent. PRO: fast, cheap, efficient. Software is free. Effective use of bandwidth. Cons: does not stop you IP from being viewed.
What is a VPN Virtual Private Network software creates a secure encrypted connection between your computer and a target network. This allows you to work as if your computer was connected to all the resources on the network.
What is an IP address? An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a numerical label assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.
