  1. Step 1: Identify and Embrace Student Differences
    1. What is the step?

      Annotations:

      • The teacher models good behavior toward ELLs students so the class shows the same actions. Students learn through seeing good role models portray good behavior.

        • Everyday inside and outside the school property. 
        1. Why is it important?

          Annotations:

          • It is important because students will understand greatly that every student is unique and special no matter the culture and background they come from. We should be accepting and welcoming of multi racial students.

            • In the classroom, school property, everyday life settings.
            1. Who will carry out the plan?

              Annotations:

              • It begins with the teacher. Not all students will come from the same background. With good example from the teacher showing love, acceptance and understanding of other culturally different students, the test of the class will be on board and show the same respect to ELLs.  
              1. How will it be carried out?

                Annotations:

                • Teachers and school principals should be prepared and aware of culturally ELLs students and how to accommodate them so they are able to learn efficiently without being left behind. Also, have class projects where students learn about different cultures have a better understanding of their peers.
              2. Step 2: Show Respect and Patience to every student
                1. What is the step?

                  Annotations:

                  • Teachers give students and more specifically ELLs students time to respond to questions in the class. Also, give enough time to finish activities and tasks on time.

                    Annotations:

                    • It will take place everyday and every time assignments, tests and activities are due.

                      • it will take place in the classroom and at home for homework and projects.
                      1. Why is it important?

                        Annotations:

                        • It is important because students should feel welcome, loved, appreciated and important in the eyes of their teachers. ELLs students will have better confidence in speaking and expressing themselves in class.  
                        1. Who will carry out the plan?

                          Annotations:

                          • The teachers will carry out the plan. Teachers need to be calm with ELLs as they begin to learn new vocabulary and contexts of the new language.
                          1. How will it be carried out?

                            Annotations:

                            • Teachers should speak clearly, slowly and in normal language instead of using slang. Teachers should give students time to respond to questions and help complete student's thought whenever possible.
                          2. Step 3: Extend your lesson outside the classroom
                            1. Who will carry out the plan?

                              Annotations:

                              • The teacher carries out the plan or the person in charge of the classroom.

                                Annotations:

                                • Teachers give assignments to the students that extends outside the classroom. this gives the student a chance to explore topics that they enjoy and relate it to what they are learning in the classroom.

                                  • It takes place every time the teacher assign projects and homework outside the lesson and is part of the curriculum.

                                      • It is important because students will put more effort into what they are learning when they use activities and projects outside the class.

                                        • Teachers may teach a specific topic and have students do an activity related to the topic and use personal knowledge and experience that they can share with their peers in class.
                                      2. Step 4: Student-Centered Learning

                                            Annotations:

                                            • Teachers assign projects that gives students the opportunity to use personally knowledge and interest in the given topic. Students can also share their work and already known knowledge with their peers.

                                              • It is important because students learn faster and retain the information they are absorbing more proficiently. Students also learn new ways and tools of learning in and out the classroom.

                                                • Every time the teacher allows it and within the curriculum.

                                                  • Teachers give activities students can choose from and present the material which ever way they choose to. ELL students will feel comfortable to use language they already know in presenting their assignments to their peers and the teacher.

                                                    • Teachers carry out the plan. This gives them a chance to understand their students in a more personal level. Teachers know students' interests and may apply that in lessons whenever possible.

                                                      • This ought to happen everyday in the classroom and throughout the school year.

                                                          Annotations:

                                                          • It is important because ELL students can gain greater confidence in participating in lessons, activities and peer group projects. This is a sure way to fit in with their classmates and learn the language faster.

                                                            • Students and more specifically ELL, are more comfortable and ready to express themselves in the classroom within given lessons and activities.
