Collapse of the
meta-narratives and social
structures e.g.
family/religion/education/class
Variety of social groups
and lifestyles
Individualism = increasing
Lack of
community/obligation to
others
Crime - Social
construct/traditional
theories are outdated
Links to
globalisation/increasing
technology/development
Explaining Crime and Deviance
Alternative view that is
critical of modern
approaches
We live in a
fragmented social
structure
There is a degree of
uncertainty in society today
No clear notion of what is right/wrong
Thus, leads to c+d
Crime is an expression
of individualism
Levin and McDevitt (2002)
Most crime/deviance is a result of
'thrill seeking'
Psychological reward of exhilaration
and the thrill of making someone
suffer
However, this does not explain why this
should provide thrills for only some of the
population, also, Fenwick and Haywood
(2002) people escape the dullness of
everyday routine and experience
self-expression/realisation
Control of crime
Fragmentation of organisaed crime prevention and the emphasis
on private crime prevention/secutity firms/informal negihbourhood
watch schemes etc
Informal crime control e.g.
"voluntary" use of Shari'ah courts in
the UK amongst sections of the
Muslim population reflects diversity
Greater emphasis on surveillance e.g. CCTV, consumer trackong (links to a pick n
mix consumer culture etc. Also link to Foucault's Panoptican Prison Analogy which
s trying to be implemented into society today especially to crackdown on the
growing cyber crime
Strengths
Recognizes that there are other factors to explain the causes of crime
Can explain widespread contemporary developments
e.g. cctv/consumer tracking
Explains the growing localism of crime
prevention strategies and how the police
respond to this
Provides alternative
explanations for non-utilitarian
crime e.g. anti-social behaviour
Weaknesses
Structural theorists argue that it
over-emphasizes how much society
has changed
Ignores social causes of c+d e.g. faulty socialisation, anomie,
strain, marginalization, alienation, deprivation etc which are
top-down and propel people into crime
Ignores that the law is dictated by the ruling class and
fails to recognize that private crime prevention strategies
can only be afforded by the m/c and r/c
