Animal and Plant Cell structures and functions based on the OCR AS Level Biology Specification.

Resource summary

Animal vs. Plant Cells_2
1 Ribosomes: mRNA translation in protein synthesis.
2 Endoplasmic Reticulum: folding of protein molecules in sacs called cisternae and the transport of synthesized proteins in vesicles to the golgi apparatus.
3 Mitochondria: powerhouse of the cell, aerobic respiration to make ATP and release energy.
4 Nucleus: contains genetic material and controls the cell's activities.
5 Plasma Membrane: selectively permeable to ions and organic molecules and controls the movement of substances in and out of cells.
6 Golgi Apparatus: modifying, sorting and packaging of proteins for secretion, also involved in the transport of lipids around the cell, and the creation of lysosomes.
7 Centriole: help with cell division in animal cells.
8 Cell Wall: provide protection and support for the plant.
9 Vacuole: provides structural support, as well as serving functions such as storage, waste disposal, protection, and growth.
10 Chloroplasts: contain chlorophyll for photsynthesis.
