Data logging in schools
1. Data logging is the process of using a computer to record measurements from a sensor (or sensors ) over a period of time
2. Common uses in schools include
  1. Science lessons
    1. where data loggers are used to record changes to temperature over time
  2. school weather stations
    1. where temperature, atmospheric pressure and wind speed can be recorded
What's the point
1. computers can be left to take accurate measurements at regular intervals for long periods of time
2. statistics and graphs can be produced to explore and compare data
3. computers can log data from multiple sensors simultaneously
Advantages and disadvantages
1. Advantages
  1. data logging is automatic once set up- the user can go and do something else while the computer gathers data
    1. reliability - once correctly calibrated computers can take very accurate measurements again and again
    2. location - sensors can be placed in locations where it would be unsafe for people (such as on roofs)
    3. frequency- readings can be taken over long intervals or very short ones , such as where several measurements a second are required
2. Disadvantages
  1. errors and faults can go unnoticed for a long time as a data logging systems is left unattended

1. some of the most powerful computers on earth are used to make weather forecast
