Drugs

Benzodiazepines
1. used for treating anxiety, seizures, and insomnia.
  1. also used as sedatives, hypnotics, and muscle relaxants.
2. ends in AM
  1. Generic & Trade Names: Alprazolam- Xanax Diazepam- Valium Midazolam- Versed
3. Slows down the movement of chemicals in the brain.
4. Common Side Effects: Sedation Dizziness Weakness Unsteadiness
  1. Monitor: BP
    1. Avoid grapefruit, caffeine, and nicotine.
Penicillin (PCN)
1. Antibiotic
  1. Monitor: Skin
2. Common Side Effects: Rash Itching Hives
3. treats infections caused by bacteria
  1. wear medi alert bracelet if allergic to PCN
    1. Monitor patient for 30 min when given parentally
4. Disrupts and weakens cell wall
Aminoglycosides
1. used to treat serious infection in the GI, respiratory, & urinary tracts
  1. Common Side Effects: Nephrotoxicity (reversible injury) Ototoxicity (irreversible injury)
  2. Monitor: Sensory problems (eg. loss of hearing)
  3. Generic & Trade Names: Amikacin - Amikin Gentamicin - Garamycin
    1. Ends in IN
  4. Can cause ear and kidney damage
2. Disrupts the cell synthesis of proteins.
Antihistamines
1. blocks the receptors of histamine.
  1. Common Side Effects: Headaches Dizziness Upset Stomach
  2. Monitor: Vital Signs/Lung sounds
  3. Avoid grapefruit juice
    1. can cause drowsiness
2. used to treat symptoms of allergic reactions
3. Generic & Trade Names: Fexofenadine - Allegra Loratadine- Claratin
  1. Ends in INE
Lubricant Laxative
1. Don't take while pregnant
  1. People who take anticoagulants (like warfarin) should not use this.
    1. Generic & Trade Names: Polethylene Glycol - MiraLax
      1. Common Side Effects: Diarrhea
    2. Treats constipation
      1. Monitor: Bowel Sounds & Stool
2. can cause pneumonia if leaks into lungs
