Resource summary

Marxist Theories of Religion
1 religion is a ruling class ideological weapon used to legitimate class inequality
1.1 presents suffering as 'god-given' and inevitable (e.g. Christianity : suffering is virtuous due to favour in the afterlife - "the meek shall inherit the earth"
1.2 creates a 'false consciousness' - a distorted view of reality to prevent attempts at social change
2 MARX: religion is an 'opium of the people'
2.1 dulls the pain of exploitation + masks its underlying cause
2.1.1 promises of afterlife/justification of suffering = illusory happiness that distracts believers from true source of oppression (capitalism)
3 CRITICISMS
3.1 Marxism ignores the positive functions of religion (e.g. psychological help with suffering)
3.2 religion does not necessarily function well as a control ideology (e.g Christianity in pre-capitalist society)
