  1. thinking distance=distance vehicle travels between a stimulus and the drivers reaction
    1. increased if driver is tired, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs
    2. braking distance=distance vehicle travels between drivers reaction and the vehicle becoming stationary
      1. increased by poor weather conditions, poor road surface, worn tyres or worn brakes
      2. stopping distance=thinking distance + braking distance
        1. increased if either braking or thinking distance increases
