Why did Britain go to
war against Germany
in 1914?
To protect Belgium's neutralaity
To uphold the 1839 Treaty with Belgium
Sir Edward Grey had sent a final ultimatum to Germany warning Britain would
become involved in the war against Germany, if they attacked
Belgium.
Germany was under a false impression that Britain
wouldn't intervene
The Kaiser didn't believe that Britain would enter the war in Belgiums
aide. The Kaiser disbelieved the strength of the Anglo-French Entente.
Britain did'nt make it clear that if Belgium or France was attacked they would enter the
War in their aid.
4th of AUGUST 1914 Sir Edward Grey stated that Britain would be entering
into the war 'Bring the country into it (War) unitedly' as Belgiums neutrality
had been attacked.

Made in 1904 the Entente was an alliance between
Britain and France. Become Triple Entente with the entry
of Russia in 1907.
Wanted to remain loyal to her commitments despite,
Churchill reminding France that the alliance meant no
firm commitment or involvement betwen Britain and

ANGLO- FRENCH NAVAL TREATY 1912
Secret naval alliance made with France , meant that Britain would patrol and concentrate
their fleet of ships in the North Sea. Whereas France would concentrate their fleet in the
mediterranean where Britains interets lay - the jewel of the empire (India), also was
strategically placed in the farside of the empire where Britain would take a longtime to
reach if attacked.
Because of the secret agreement,unknown to the public, Britain had
already sided with France and Frances entry into the war also meant
Britain's too.

Russia's entry into the war , meant Britain would
soon have to enter due to the Triple Entente.
The times Citiscism of Grey , as if Frances coast was attacked and wondered'If the word
honour should be erased from the English Language'. Indicating that many felt that Britain
would abbandon France.
