B1.1 THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION
  1. THE CREATIONIST THEORY
    1. All forms of life existing were created by god
      1. Modern creationism uses scientific evidence to support scripture
      2. KEY WORD: evolution= the gradual change of a species over time
        1. JEAN BAPTISTE LAMARK THOUGHT...
          1. All organisms were linked by 'the fountain of life'
            1. No evidence of this
            2. Animals adapted to suit their envoirnment
              1. Caused by inheritance of aquired charecteristics
                1. How they behaved affected features of their body 'use it or loose it'
                  1. Changes in bodies were quite clearly not passed onto offspring
                2. CHARLES DARWIN THOUGHT...
                  1. Evolution through natural selection
                    1. Challenged belief that god made all plants and animals on earth
                    2. 'Survival of the fittest'
                      1. Usefull inherited charecteristics are passed onto offspring
                        1. No way of explaining variety and inheritance together
                        2. Spent years gathering evidence on HMS beagle and studied many different species
                          1. Many scientists argued that there is not enough evidence
                        3. EVIDENCE OF EVOLUTION
                          1. FOSSILS
                            1. Preserved remains of organisms, or the imprint of organisms from millions of years ago
                              1. Shows how much or how little an orgaisms has changed over time
                                1. Fossil record is incomplete... there are gaps
                                2. LIVING ORGANISMS
                                  1. Similar organisms have differences that help them adapt to their envoirnment
                                    1. They have similar body plans descended from a common ancestor
                                      1. Differences such as zebra stripes for camoflauge show that they have adapted totheir envoirnment
                                    2. NATURAL SELECTION
                                      1. 'Survival of the fittest'
                                        1. Individuals in a species show variation caused by mutations to give advantages
                                          1. Only offspring with best genes survive and breed sucsessfully
                                            1. This passes these advantageous genes onto the next generation
                                            2. CLASSIFICATION
                                              1. Organisation of living things according to their similarities
                                                1. Natural classification to clasify living organisms
                                                  1. kingdom is the biggest group, they get more specific as they get smaller
                                                    1. Classes: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species
                                                      1. Species is group of similar organisms that can interbreed to producefertile offspring
                                                        1. To see if they are the same species you breed them and if the orgaism is fertile they are the same species, eg lion and tiger breed to produce a liger so they are not in the same species because the offspring is infertile
                                                  2. EVOLUTIONARY TREES
                                                    1. Oldest species at base of tree
                                                      1. Recently evolved species and mostshown at end of branches
                                                        1. More recently the species have diverged the more closely related they are
                                                          1. Extinct creatures can not be at top of branch
                                                            1. All linked to once common ancestor
