  1. TOP DOWN.... Initiated and managed by a large organisation, has affect on individuals but without them being allowed an input.
    1. Three gorges dam Yangtze river.... Chinese gov built dam. Provide green energy 10% of China's energy, boosts international status, provides employment. BUT it destroyed ecosystems, 1.9 mill people displaced to higher less fertile ground or urban areas where they have no applicable skill.
      1. Cons
        1. Run by larger companies so poor understanding of the needs of individuals & no local knowledge. Doesn't always benefit locals
        2. Pros
          1. More funding therefore more likely to be quicker with better experienced workers, product is better quality.
        3. Individuals , groups or businesses and nations have different views on development and the use and management of resources according to their needs and interests.
          1. Land in Kericho, Kenya
            1. Natural forest
              1. Environmentalists-> maintains biodiversity. Crop growers-> maintains water cycle. International-> climate change
                1. Farmers/ tea growers-> uses fertile land. Developers-> takes up land from building
                2. Tea growing
                  1. Individuals-> livelihood. international-> get tea. Business-> more money per hectare then other crops
                    1. Environmentalists-> natural forest destroyed, unbalance natural cycle e.g. water cycle
                    2. Housing
                      1. Local people-> better housing. Developers/builders->business. Gov't->seem like they're doing something. tea companies-> housing for workers.
                        1. Farmers-> previously working land for da cash. uses resources. land per person going dowwwnn
                        2. Food Crops
                          1. Locals-> no starve no more & sell excess= better livelihood. Gov't-> improve trade links & GDP. Business-> more production=more money. Nation-> better food=better health
                            1. Land could be used for high cash crop, therefore more Wonga to purchase imported food. Bordering countries-> competition for exported foods
                            2. Flowers
                              1. Companies-> increased income, lower wages. Consumers-> get flowers all year round
                                1. Tea growing companies/farmers-> less space for them. Locals-> flowers=thirsty plant, lower water table. Environmentalists-> transported in refrigeration
                                2. Fuel Wood
                                  1. Locals-> provides cheap fuel & excess to sell= local business boost
                                    1. Companies-> takes up space. Environmentalists-> no living space for animals
                                3. BOTTOM UP... run by local people and will be directly helping them or their community.
                                  1. Muthukyandia, Sri Lanka, PASA. (Partially top down)
                                    1. PASA came to village, taught them how to build water tanks. Locals provided labour and money. Labourers learnt skills to allow the to carry on building/repairing them.Started as top down the developed into a bottom up project.

                                        1. 1) Better direct benefit to local community. 2) Tailored to specific needs of local economy environment etc. 3) Uses local knowledge to better project, they know what the problem is & how to address. 4) Helps unity in community

                                          1. Less funding so finished product is less high tech & economical. hard to scale up as it is specific to area. No/minimal impact on wider inter/national community
