  1. Bentham
    1. Principle of Utility= this claims that we should choose the action most likely to bring about the "greatest good for the greatest number"
      1. Hedonic Calculus can be used to calculate the most pleasurable action- 1. Intensity, 2. Duration, 3. Certainty, 4. Propinquity (closeness), 5. Fecundity (chance of further pleasures), 6. Purity (not followed by pain), 7. Extent
        1. Weaknesses
          1. values everyone as equal, not dependent on position in society
            1. hedonic calculus is comprehensive and covers everything
              1. Reflects how we instinctively act- save most people
                1. Takes consequences into account which avoids impulsive acts
                2. Strengths
                  1. You can't predict consequences e.g. Stalin may have rose up if Hitler didn't
                    1. pleasures aren't equal
                      1. No protection for minorities
                        1. Nozick- perhaps self-worth, freedom, identity are more important to humanity than pleasure
                          1. whose happiness matters more? leads to swine ethics
