Solitude: Chapter 5
  1. Relating back to his transcendentalist beliefs people and nature go hand in hand. But overall nature is always going to be there, it is people who need nature more, but they still help one another, because humans help keep nature alive.
    1. He is constantly surrounded by nature so he has his own companion; nature.
      1. This chapter is mainly about nature. From the title solitude, he is going to be alone with no human contact, but he is okay with that because he believes all he needs is nature.
        1. He says he gets visitors, which are ghosts. He feels a spiritual connection with nature which allows him to see these ghosts. He does not need people the way others do. Maybe Thoreau is secretly feeling lonely because he has created these characters to keep himself busy.

          1. “The most innocent and encouraging society may be found in any natural object,”(Thoreau 145). NAture is as pure as it can get, in transcendentalist beliefs being surrounded by nature presents you in your best form possible.
            1. Thoreau also seems to look at others who do not appreciate the way he appreciated nature in a negative way. Such as the farmer who thought he was giving up so much, he twisted the story around so it is the farmer who is giving up a life because the farmer is the one who is truly alone. He has the job to keep himself busy, afraid to be alone with his thoughts while Thoreau does not mind it.
