Resource summary

To what extent has the purpose of art changed over time from being a documentation of the past to a expression of futuristic/progressive ideology?
  1. Easy to fit with the EPQ requirements
    1. Yes as I have not studied this before despite studying art and history before.
    2. Time
      1. Might have to make more specific as it does seem quite broad at the moment. Maybe research specific artists, pieces of art that show this.
        1. Could complete in time .
      2. Achievability
        1. A lot of modern art is left up to interpretation, therefore a final argument or outcome may be hard to conclude however that means there will be lots to discuss. Definitely achieveable as both art and history is widely discussed therefore it is not a abnormal topic to focus on. May have to focus into a more specific topic within this idea in order to get a good argument.
        2. Personal interests
          1. History really interests me especially when incorporating ideas to do with modern day society and progressive ideas. Art also really interests me and is significant in understanding and interpreting many historical events.
            1. Some art history is hard to understand.
          2. Help available
            1. There have been many pieces of artwork produced throughout history and also many contemporary artists nowadays so researching and making comparisons will not be a difficulty.
            2. Your motivation
              1. This will be helpful later on as I would maybe like to study art and history further after A Levels.
                1. Relates to 2 of my 3 A Levels but is also just a topic I am interested in. Also is will look into psychological and philosophical ideas too which may make me realise that is also something I am interested in .
              2. Ease of finding information
                1. Many different pieces of art documented through history online and in galleries, many artists with their own opinions. Especially contemporary artists will be able to give strong opinions on this. Lots of information can be researched.
                2. Current coursework
                  1. Have not studied this before but have done GCSE history and art which will impact my understanding. Have debated and researched controversial topics such as this before.
                  2. Ethics
                    1. Is your project ‘ethical’?
                      1. Depending on how specific I make the final topic focus, I can include the ideas of how art in the past has documented negative events in the past involving racism and sexism, to how more contemporary art focuses on abolishing these outdated views. It has the potential to include many ethical points without causing offence as it will all be based off history and present day art and artefacts.
                    2. Current knowledge
                      1. Not a lot of art history knowledge but did study both art and history at GCSE. Also did some analysing and interpreting of sources, some being art, during GCSE history.
