Joseph Smith
Claimed an angel had given him the location of two gold plates which had the 3rd testiment written on
He translated these into the book of mormon

Kirtland, Ohio 1831
He was condemned as a heretic in New York State and forced flee to Kirtland where he set up a bank
Missouri 1837
Following the economic depression of 1837 Smith's bank went bankrupt and the Mormons were forced out to Missouri where few people lived
Nauvoo, Illinois 1839
The Mormons were attacked by mobs, and an extermination order was issued by Governor Boggs so they moved to Nauvoo
Smith was killed by a mob after he sanctioned polygamy in 1844
Many christians viewed Smith as a sinner because they didn't want this new religion becoming powerful

Took over as the leader of the Mormons after the assaination of Joseph Smith

He claimed that Salt Lake was the promised land

People disliked the encouragement Mormons gave to slaves and to freed slaves to join them.
