            1. He was condemned as a heretic in New York State and forced flee to Kirtland where he set up a bank

                1. Following the economic depression of 1837 Smith's bank went bankrupt and the Mormons were forced out to Missouri where few people lived
                  1. Nauvoo, Illinois 1839
                    1. The Mormons were attacked by mobs, and an extermination order was issued by Governor Boggs so they moved to Nauvoo
                      1. Smith was killed by a mob after he sanctioned polygamy in 1844
                  2. Many christians viewed Smith as a sinner because they didn't want this new religion becoming powerful

                        1. An 'unpopulous' country where 'a good living will require hard labour, and consequently will be coveted by no other people'.
                        2. Took over as the leader of the Mormons after the assaination of Joseph Smith
                          1. The Mormons believed that Young was sent by God as the prophet
                            1. He claimed that Salt Lake was the promised land
                            2. Why were the Mormons hated?
                              1. Many Christians thought the new religion was 'contemptible gibberish'.
                                1. People disliked the Mormon belief that they could have more than one wife.

                                      1. People were afraid of the large and growing numbers of Mormons.

                                            1. People disliked the encouragement Mormons gave to slaves and to freed slaves to join them.
