Resource summary
Proportional Representation
Advantages
The proportion of votes received by a political party would be approximately equal to the proportion of seats allocated in the Reichstag.
The system was considered to be fair.
Disadvantages
Small extremist parties were able to gain a foothold in the Reichstag and receive publicity for their causes.
As there are no wasted votes it is extremely difficult for any one party to gain 50 percent or more of the vote.
All governments were coalition governments.
This gave the President too much power as it allowed him to discard the democratic system of government.
Between 1929 and 1933, Presidential decrees were used more often. This helped to undermine respect and confidence in the new parliamentary democracy.
