Resource summary
For and against developing the ANWR Coastal Plain
For
Only 8% is being considered for exploration
1.5 acres. If oil is discovered, only 2000 acres would be directly affected by drilling
The economic impact
The USA would benefit due to royalties, taxes, and lease rentals (rent to allow drilling)
Jobs
Between 250,00 and 735,000 would be created over the USA
USA's best chance for a major new discovery of oil and gas
9-16billion barrels of oil under the Coastal Plaine
30 years' worth of oil imports from the Middle East to the USA
Imported oil too expensive
2007 - USA imported an average of 60% of its oil at enormous expense
Oil production in the North Slope oilfields is in decline
Provides the USA with nearly 16% of its domestic oil production but has been declining since 1988
No negative impacts on wildlife
Oil and gas development in Alaska's Arctic have successfully co-existed
Central Arctic Caribou Herd has grown from 3000 to 32,000 since the 1970s
Advances in Arctic technology
Reduced the 'footprint' of Arctic oil development (surface area occupied by the development)
Alaskan support
More than 75% of Alaskans favour exploration and production in the ANWR
Against
Impact on biodiversity
Caribou
US Fish and Wildlife service - development could cause a major decline or displacement of the Porcupine River Caribou Herd
Herd would be displaced to areas where there are more predators, poorer forage and more mosquitoes (drain over 2 pints of blood a week)
Polar bears
Denning polar bears are very senstive to industrial activity
Females may abandon their dens - fatal for cubs
Birds
Some birds that gather on the Plain are highly sensitive to human disturbance
Snow geese are disturbed by helicopters and aircraft up to 4 miles away
Impact on the environment
Prudhoe Bay - mountains of sewage, sludge metal, rubbish, and over 60 waste sites that leak acids, pesticides, solvents , and diesel
Could be the same on the Coastal Plain - tuned into a vast landscape of unsightly derricks, roads and pipelines
Risk of oil spills from pipelines and oil tankers
The Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 was an environmental disaster caused by human error
Affected the entire ecosystem, and there are real fears of further major oil spills
