Mexican-American War

Southerners and Westeners supported the war but Northerners aw it as Southern war of aggression
Texan Independence - American people settled in Texas in 1820s. In 1829, Mexico freed the slaves and banned further immigration in Texas. American defied both laws. The American Texas did not like the President trying to enforce the law and declared indpendence. The Army marched in with President Santa Anna but American from South and West came and aided Texas which allowed the defeat of the Army. Santa Anna was forced to recognise the independence of Texas
Texas wanted to join USA but Northernes did not want it as they feared the spread of slavery. Texas was big enough to spilt up into five slave state which would tilt the balance. The issue of Texas was shelved until 1845, when it was admitted to Union as single state. This made Mexico angry. President Polk sent John Slidell as emissary to offer 30 million dollars to purchase New Mexico and California but the government rejected it. Polk set US troop to provoke incident that would cause war. Mexican troops ambushed American tropps. Polk declared that Mecxican shed "American blood on American soil" and declared war
