Resource summary
Gluconeogenesis
Function
To form Glucose from non-carbohydrate sources when thier isnt enough carbohydrate available
Takes place in: 90% in the liver and 10% in the kidneys
Uses ATP
Starting Material
LACTATE in Muscle, travels to the liver to be broken down into pyruvate, then goes though gluconeogenesis
GLYCEROL from break down of fats from beta-oxidiation
NOT FATTY ACIDS
PYRUVATE: combines with CO2 +ATP+ H2O = OXALOACETATE + ADP +Pi + 2H+
OXALOACETATE is reduced to MALATE by MALATE DEHYDROGENASE and NADH + H+ to get though to the cytosol
MALATE is then OXIDISED back to OXALOACETATE by NAD+
OXALOACETATE combines with GTP = Phosphophenolpyruvate using the enzyme PHOSPHOPHENOLPYRUVATE CARBOXYKINASE
PYRUVATE goes in via PHOSPHOPHENOL PYRUVATE
GLYCEROL
GLYCEROL froms GLYCEROL PHOSPHATE using the enzyme GLYCEROL KINASE
GLYCEROL KINASE then forms DIHYDROXYACETONE PHOSPHATE byt GLYCEROL PHOSPHATE DEHYDROGENASE
GLYCEROL goes into DIHYDROXYACETONE PHOSPHATE
