  1. The Danish War (1864)
    1. Denmark´s attempt to anex Schleswig- Holstein led to an alliance with Austria.
      1. Denmark was defeated by Prussia
        1. Holstein given to Austria Schleswig given to Prussia
          1. Prussia and Austria desagreed over the admin. of these provinces..
      2. Austro-Prussian War (1866)
        1. Prussia and Austria argued over the admin. (internal order & the right of passage), of Schleswig & Holstein.
          1. The Seven Weeks War
            1. Because the Prussian army (General Helmuth von Moltke), crushed very easily the Austrian Forces
            2. Bismarck provoked Austria into declaring war on Prussia
              1. Prussia realized that it needed Austria for a conflict with France, so Bismarck gave some piece terms
                1. Austria had to recognize Prussia´s dominance of the German States.
                2. Also dissolved the German Confed. and the North German Confederation was formed. Ruled by the Prussian King and a bicameral legislature.
                  1. Bicameral Legislature: Lower House- The Reichstag. and Upper House.- The Bundesrat
                    1. Allowed Austria & the South to remain independent
                3. Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871)
                  1. Bismarck provoked a war with France. Main Cause: Despute over the Spanish throne.
                    1. French Minister went to Wilhelm I who refused to solve the despute.
                      1. Bismarck received a telegram from Wilhelm I and edited it to make it insulting to the French.
                        1. Napoleon III declared war in July 1870
                          1. Very harsh with the French. He starved the city (Paris) for 5 months
                        2. Napoleon III protested when Prince Leopold became the candidate for the trone
                          1. Treaty of Frankfurt (May 1871)
                            1. France ceded Alsace & Lorraine to Germany and payed a big indemnity
                              1. Franco. German relations full of hate & anger. Seeds for WW1
